If you'd like your child to improve on different academic areas, such as spelling, reading comprehension, and vocabulary, a dictionary can be of great help. However, a dictionary alone won't do much; your child should know how to use it effectively to get the most out of it. For a few tips on how you can teach your child to use the dictionary, refer to the post below.

How to Use a Dictionary

Practice the Alphabet

Knowing the alphabet is necessary to use the dictionary. For that reason, practice the order of the letters with your child. You can sing the ABC song to help them memorize it.

Give Them the Right Dictionary

There are a few different types of dictionaries (for translations, legal, medical, etc.). However, it's probable that the one that'll benefit your child the most at the moment is a pocket-size English dictionary.

Teach Them About the Dictionary

Many dictionaries have a thesaurus, the words' pronunciations, their part of speech, and more. Teach your child about them and what they're for so they can use the dictionary as an effective learning tool.

Search for Unknown Words

To search for new words, teach your child to search for the section of the first letter of the word they need. Then, they should use the guide words at the top of the pages to quickly assess the contents in a page.

Work on Understanding the Meaning

Your child should understand the definitions. If they're having a bit of trouble with one, tell them to search for the unknown words in it, so they can get a better idea of what a word means.
