Reading is a tremendously important skill for your child to develop, both academically and for their day to day life. There’s no better time than the present to encourage your child to take up this valuable pastime (especially as it’s a new year), so follow these tips from The Tutoring Center in Southgate and your child will have their nose buried in a book before you know it.

Lead by example

It’s more than likely that your child bases a large part of their behavior on the behavior they see you exhibiting, so make sure you’re providing a good model for them by opting to enjoy a good book in your downtime instead of watching TV or browsing the Internet. They’ll soon follow suit.

Provide the resources

Providing a well-stocked library space with a reading nook in your home is an excellent way to motivate reading. Allow your child to decorate the space to their tastes and they’ll love spending time there.

Engage with them

If you have a young child, they may well appreciate being read to before they take up reading independently. You could ask them to take turns so that they read to you too. Older children may not want to be read to (it may feel childish or unnecessary), but make sure to ask them lots of questions about what they’re reading, what they like and don’t like about their current book and so forth to help keep them engaged with their reading.Being around to help your child with words they don’t understand or particularly difficult passages will also help them become better readers.

Reward their efforts

Rewarding your child’s hard work is important to foster good habits. That said, the reward need not be monetary or material, and you shouldn’t promise them rewards for reading a certain number of books or similar as they may simply end up reading to get things they want. Instead, occasionally offer a treat out of the blue and tell them it’s because you’ve noticed how well they’ve been doing. You could take them on an educational trip to the zoo or to a museum, cook their favorite meal, or even get them a new book! Giving books as rewards or gifts will only increase how positively your child sees books and the act of reading in general.

If you feel that your child could benefit from a little extra help with their reading, or any other academic area, don’t hesitate to contact The Tutoring Center in Southgate.
